Every October the same question comes up: what can we do this Halloween that everyone will actually enjoy? Kids want something exciting. Teens want something that isn’t “for little kids.” Adults want time together that isn’t another night on the couch. A Halloween escape room in virtual reality covers all three.
At Odyssey VR Lounge in Clayton, just a short drive from Concord, Walnut Creek and Pleasant Hill, our free-roam horror games put your group inside a haunted mansion, a monster-filled castle, or a zombie outbreak. Everyone walks the same space, hears the same creaks, and has to work together to get out. It’s spooky, and it’s a lot of fun with the right people next to you.

Why a VR escape room beats a regular haunted house
A haunted house happens to you. You walk a set path, something jumps out, and it’s over. In a VR escape room you drive the story. You search rooms, solve puzzles, split up, call for help and make decisions as a group. The scares still land, but they come with a goal: figure it out together and escape.
That’s why it works so well for bonding:
- Everyone has a job. One person spots clues, another solves puzzles, someone keeps watch, and someone (there is always someone) screams first.
- You have to talk to each other. Escape games only work when the team communicates. It’s teamwork disguised as a fright night.
- Nobody is stuck watching. Up to six players share the same game at once, so the whole group plays instead of waiting in line.
- The stories last. Who froze at the door, who solved the final puzzle, who hid behind their brother. You’ll be telling these on the drive home and at next year’s Halloween party.
Our Halloween horror lineup
Here are the horror titles in our game library. Every one is a free-roam game for up to 6 players. Games are priced in credits, and one credit is about 15 minutes of play.
The Ghoulies: the family-friendly fright
Escape Room · up to 6 players · 1 credit (about 15 minutes)
New to our library, and the best first pick for families with younger kids. The Ghoulies is tagged both Horror and Family-Friendly. It has the playful Halloween spookiness without the nightmare fuel, so the whole family can try an escape game together.
Don’t Scream
Escape Room · up to 6 players · 2 credits (about 30 minutes)
The name is the challenge. Don’t Scream is all about nerves and staying calm while the tension builds. It’s a great pick for a group of friends who like to tease each other about who flinches first.
Insanity: The Haunting
Escape Room · up to 6 players · 2 credits (about 30 minutes)
A haunted, psychological escape game for groups who want eerie exploration and a slow build of dread. Try it with teens and adults who love a good ghost story.
Mansion of Death
Escape Room · up to 6 players · 3 credits (about 45 minutes)
A staff favorite and our longest pure escape room in the horror lineup. Mansion of Death gives your team a full 45 minutes to explore a deadly haunted mansion and find a way out. It’s the one to book when your group wants the full haunted-house adventure.
Sintclair vs Dracula: Escape Shooter
Escape Room + Shooter · up to 6 players · 3 credits (about 45 minutes)
Puzzles and monster-fighting in one game. Your team takes on Dracula himself, mixing escape-room problem solving with action. It’s perfect for groups where half the players want to think and half want to fight.
Saintclair vs Dracula: Horde Mode
Cooperative wave shooter · up to 6 players · 2 credits (about 30 minutes)
Same gothic world, but now it’s about holding the line. Wave after wave of Dracula’s creatures come at the team, and you survive by covering each other. Great for competitive siblings who need to learn to work together.
Dark Z
Cooperative zombie shooter · up to 6 players · 1 credit (about 15 minutes)
A quick, intense zombie survival game. At one credit it’s the perfect warm-up before a longer escape room, or the “one more round” at the end of the night.
Want even more scares? Check out Rotten Apple, a 60-minute horror escape shooter, and the rest of the game library.
How to pick the right scare for your group
Playing with younger kids
Start with The Ghoulies. It’s short, family-friendly and a great introduction to how VR escape games work. If everyone’s still smiling afterward, try something a little spookier next.
Parents and teens
Insanity: The Haunting or Don’t Scream hit the sweet spot. They’re scary enough that teens think they’re cool and short enough that nobody is overwhelmed. Adding Dark Z gives you an action round to finish the night.
Friends who love horror
Go big with Mansion of Death or Sintclair vs Dracula: Escape Shooter. Both are 45-minute adventures that test your team’s nerve and its puzzle skills.
Groups that can’t agree
Mix it up. A popular combo is one escape room plus one shooter, for example Insanity: The Haunting followed by Saintclair vs Dracula: Horde Mode. You get the puzzles and the action in one visit.
Tips for a great Halloween VR night
- Book ahead. October weekends fill up fast, especially the week of Halloween.
- Talk about scare levels first. A quick “how scary is too scary?” before you play keeps the night fun for everyone. Our staff are happy to help you choose.
- Pair up nervous players. A confident teammate nearby makes a huge difference, and helping each other through the scary parts is half the bonding.
- Wear comfortable clothes. You’ll be walking, crouching and maybe running. Costumes are fun, but leave the big masks and capes at home since they won’t fit under a headset.
- Make a night of it. Grab food at O Sabor Cafe and swap stories about who screamed loudest.
